What’s the difference between signing up online or at the Driver License Office?

In short, nothing. When you sign up at your local Driver License Office (DLO), you are signing up with the state organ, eye and tissue donor registry for Colorado. You can also register your decision to become an organ, eye and tissue donor with the Colorado state registry on our website. If you sign up on our website here you are on the donor registry just the same, but you won’t get a heart symbol on your license until you say Yes at the DLO the next time.

Donate Life Colorado is the brand of the donor registry and the symbol of the cause of organ, eye and tissue donation and transplantation overall. Donor Alliance maintains the registry and ensures that lifesaving organ and tissue donations are safely and swiftly received by the 2,000 people in need in our community. The Rocky Mountain Lions Eye Bank facilitates cornea donation in Colorado.

What’s the difference between the Colorado state registry and the national registry?

The national registry was created in partnership with our parent organization, Donate Life America, and other national partners to promote national campaigns and mobile-friendly donor registrations. For example, when you sign up as a donor via the iPhone Health app, you are registering with the national registry. No matter which registry you are on, both the state and national registry will be checked at the time of death. Your most recent registration will be honored as the legal document of your gift.

How do I earn my heart on my driver license?

Colorado residents, between the ages of 21 and 65, may be eligible to renew their driver license or state ID online. When you renew online, make sure to mark your decision to become an organ, eye and tissue donor on the online form. You may also be eligible to mail in the appropriate renewal form.

Appointments are also available for a variety of Colorado Division of Motor Vehicle Services.

To renew your driver license or state ID online or to make an appointment visit the Colorado Department of Revenue Division of Motor Vehicles website or call DMV Customer Service at 303-205-5600.

What’s the difference between DMV and DLO?

The terms DMV (Division of Motor Vehicles) and DLO (Driver License Office) are often used interchangeably. Here in Colorado the DMV is where you go to renew your title and vehicle registration, and the DLO is where you get your driver license. DMV also encompassed the entire division and can be used to refer to all related items.
